School libraries project
In partnership with our libraries project volunteer Jenny Lewis and the New Milton Rotary Club, AET is improving children's access to reading materials through the establishment of libraries in primary schools. Books are supplied via donations from UK school children and our partner Book Aid International and we also source some books locally in Uganda. To date, libraries have been set up in 25 primary schools in schools in 5 districts of Eastern Uganda (Mbale, Manafwa, Bulambuli, Sironko and Kapchorwa). Teachers from project schools also receive training on library management.
Primary School Mothers project
This project aims to increase the enrolment and retention of girls in primary school through supporting School Mothers. School Mothers are community based local women who act as role models to the girls, visit girls in schools to provide guidance and training, and advocate in the community for the importance of girls' education. The project is operating in 30 primary schools in Northern Uganda (Oyam and Otuke districts).
Secondary School Mothers project
Building on the success of the Primary School Mothers project, this project aims to improve support for girls in secondary schools in Northern Uganda through the School Mothers approach. The project also involves a mentoring scheme, through which secondary school girls mentor primary school girls to encourage them to contiune on to secondary education.
Mother Tongue Education project
This four year programme seeks to improve access to and quality of primary education for marginalised children in Northern Uganda through the use of mother tongue. Learning in initial years in mother tongue is known to benefit the participation and performance of children and to increase parental involvement in education. AET is working with local partner LABE (Literacy and Basic Education) and in collaboration with Ugandan education authorities to reach 240 school communities across the region.
