As a result of the Millennium Development Goals, millions more children are accessing primary education than ever before. However, there are still 72 million children around the world who are not in school. Most are secondary age and most are girls.
If this generation of children are not provided with
opportunities beyond basic education, they may never
have the chance to reach their full potential and fulfil their
dreams. It will also be harder for them to escape poverty,
to find jobs, to support their families and to help develop
their own communities progressively and peacefully.
We are working with children, parents/guardians,
teachers and governments across Somalia
(Somaliland, Puntland and Central Southern Somalia) and Southern Sudan to identify problems and shortages in secondary education and then work together to find innovative, relevant and long term solutions. In Kenya, Uganda and Swaziland we respond to individual children’s educational needs through providing scholarships and bursaries.

• Improving infrastructure by constructing school buildings and classrooms, allowing more children to access secondary education
• Raising educational standards by providing students
the opportunity to sit internationally recognised exams for
the first time
• Improving learning opportunities by providing resources
such as: practical classroom teaching kits and mobile science vehicles to rural schools.gif)
• Increasing educational access by constructing
‘Girl Friendly Spaces’ to ensure girls can access
toilet facilities at school and have a supportive place for study and after school activities
• Encouraging community support for education by helping marginalised communities establish school libraries and by broadcasting public radio programmes and discussions on the benefits of secondary education
• Improving the quality of education provision by training teachers, school management bodies and government staff so they can deliver a higher standard and more relevant education
• Supporting individual secondary school children through various grant and scholarship schemes covering school fees, uniforms and books
