By the end of 2009, an estimated 43,300,000 people were displaced across the world
- the highest figure in over 20 years.
Uprooted by conflict, persecution and environmental
disasters, refugees and IDPs (Internally displaced
persons) face some of the toughest and most insecure
living conditions known. Often with no food, water or
shelter, education can be seen as a luxury. But
education is a basic right, one that is vital in restoring
hope and dignity to people and integral to rebuilding
society. AET has been working within IDP camps in
Somaliland and Central Southern Somalia, and with
refugees in the UK to make sure that they too are able
to access their right to education and training.

• Delivering literacy and numeracy classes in IDP
camps where education is not normally available
• Providing skills training in IDP camps to enable
people to find work and self-employment in areas
such as mechanics and tailoring
• Supporting African refugees in the UK by providing
advice on educational opportunities and educational
funding
• Developing the capacity of African refugee
organisations in the UK by providing training
courses in research and advocacy skills
• Carrying out research into the educational and
training needs of refugees within the UK
