Support for Secondary Education

AET is providing support to children in secondary schools in Somalia (including Somaliland and Puntland) and to children in secondary schools in Swaziland. In Somalia, the Trust works in partnership with the different local Ministries of Education and with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and the BBC World Service Trust. AET supports building and rehabilitation of secondary school classrooms and facilities, training secondary school teachers and providing new textbooks and learning materials, especially new audio based English Language, science and mathematics materials, for secondary schools. In 2007 AET provided furnishing and books to help establish libraries in eighteen secondary schools in Somalia.

Literacy and Skills Training for Young People

AET supports literacy and skills training courses for thousands of young men and women who have missed out in education because of civil wars and conflict. In Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland the Trust runs a large Radio Literacy Programme in partnership the BBC World Service Trust.

Over the past ten years 60,000 adults and young people have successfully completed literacy courses supported by AET. They include Somali girls and young women, Somali and Southern Sudanese demobilees and ex-militia, people with disabilities, refugees and Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and young nomads and pastoralists.

In addition to literacy and basic education classes the Trust also supports skills and vocational training classes for young people. Around 20,000 people have gained new skills and vocational qualifications in areas such as health care, computing, tailoring, driving, carpentry, secretarial and business studies.
