AET's Aims

AET was founded in 1958 specifically to help improve education and training in Africa.  It aims to help children and young people in or from Africa, to get a good education, one which is relevant to their needs, suited to their environment, and one which will help them to overcome poverty and live healthily and safely in their community.

AET aims to ensure that those who have missed out in the past are given the opportunity to gain education and vocational skills  -  girls and young women, people in rural areas, minorities, people with disabilities and refugees and the internally displaced.

The Trust works primarily by helping local communities to help themselves.  It sees itself as having a special role in helping people from areas which have been affected by conflict.  It helps to promote awareness of the needs of people in these areas.  It helps these communities and governments to rebuild education and training systems. It helps to train senior officials, NGO workers, educators and teachers.  It helps the young people and children to get a good education either by supporting them at schools and colleges or by helping to provide high quality non-formal literacy and education courses.
